About Shepparton
Shepparton, located in Victoria’s Goulburn Valley, is a major regional city 181km north-northeast of Melbourne, celebrated for its agricultural productivity and cultural diversity. Situated on the Goulburn River’s floodplain, it produces 25% of Victoria’s rural output, including fruits, dairy, and vegetables, earning the title Australia’s “food bowl.”
Its Mediterranean-like climate supports lush farmlands, while its vibrant community, shaped by post-WWII immigration, offers diverse cuisines and festivals. Shepparton serves as a commercial, educational, and emergency services hub, with institutions like GOTAFE and a strong Indigenous Yorta Yorta presence.
Origin of name
Shepparton’s name comes from Sherbourne Sheppard, who managed the Tallygaroopna run in 1843. Initially Macguire’s Punt after a ferry service, the settlement was surveyed in 1855. By 1860, it was officially named Shepparton, reflecting Sheppard’s influence during its early pastoral days.
History
Shepparton, originally Yorta Yorta land called Kanny-goopna, was a sheep station by the 1840s. European settlement began with Joseph Hawdon and Charles Bonney’s 1838 cattle drive, followed by Sherbourne Sheppard’s pastoral run. The 1850s gold rush made it a key river crossing, with Patrick Macguire’s punt service spurring growth as Macguire’s Punt. Surveyed in 1855, it became a township in 1860.
The railway’s arrival in 1880 and the Goulburn Valley irrigation system’s development in the early 20th century transformed Shepparton into an agricultural powerhouse. SPC Ardmona’s canning factory, established in 1917, became a major employer, processing peaches and pears. Post-WWII immigration from Europe, South Asia, and the Middle East diversified the community, doubling growth by the 1960s
