About Rutherglen

Rutherglen, located in Victoria’s Indigo Shire, 270 km northeast of Melbourne, is a charming rural town celebrated for its world-class wineries, gold rush history, and agricultural richness. Situated near the Murray River, its fertile soils and warm climate nurture vineyards producing renowned fortified wines, alongside dairy and grain farming. The town’s quaint streets, lined with historic buildings, reflect its 19th-century origins, while its vibrant community hosts festivals like the Winery Walkabout, drawing wine enthusiasts and tourists. Rutherglen’s blend of Indigenous Gooramadda heritage, European settlement, and modern viticulture makes it a unique destination in Victoria’s High Country.

Origin of name

Rutherglen’s name derives from the Scottish town of Rutherglen, named by surveyor John Foord in 1860, reflecting his heritage. Inspired by “Ruther,” meaning red or ruddy in Old Norse, and “glen,” it suited the town’s reddish soils and valley setting, formalised during its gold rush era.

History

Rutherglen, originally Gooramadda land, was settled by Europeans in the 1830s as pastoral runs. The 1858 gold rush spurred growth, with discoveries along Chiltern-Rutherglen Road attracting miners. Named Rutherglen in 1860, the town thrived as a mining hub, with grand hotels and stores built by the 1870s.

The railway’s arrival in 1879 boosted trade, linking Rutherglen to Melbourne. As gold declined, viticulture emerged, with vineyards planted in the 1860s by German and French settlers.

By the early 20th century, Rutherglen’s fortified wines, like Muscat and Tokay, gained global acclaim, with wineries like All Saints and Campbells leading the industry. The town diversified into dairy and grain, supported by irrigation from Lake Moodemere. Post-WWII, Italian and Greek immigrants enriched its cultural fabric.

Famous landmarks

Its three most famous landmarks are:

  • All Saints Estate: A historic winery, established in 1864, known for its castle-like cellar door and premium wines.
  • Rutherglen Wine Experience and Visitor Centre: A central hub on Main Street, showcasing wine history and local produce.
  • Lake Moodemere: A serene lake, used for irrigation and recreation, with scenic trails and birdlife.
