About Melton
Melton, a bustling suburb 35 km west of Melbourne in Victoria’s City of Melton, is a rapidly growing community known for its suburban expansion, agricultural heritage, and vibrant multicultural fabric. Situated in a fertile basin, its temperate climate supports lush parks and recreational spaces, ideal for families and outdoor enthusiasts. Melton’s Wurundjeri heritage blends with a diverse community, shaped by post-WWII European migration, particularly from Malta and Italy, fostering lively local events like the Melton Country Festival. The suburb offers modern amenities, including Woodgrove Shopping Centre, schools, and sports facilities, with easy access via the Western Highway and Melton railway station. Transitioning from a rural outpost to a commuter hub, Melton balances its pastoral roots with urban progress, making it a dynamic part of Melbourne’s western corridor.
Origin of name
Melton’s name stems from Melton Mowbray, England, chosen by pastoralist Charles Norton in the 1830s to honor his hometown. Formalized in 1862 during the suburb’s survey, it reflected the English town’s agricultural and hunting legacy, aligning with Melton’s early pastoral identity.
History
Melton, originally Wurundjeri land of the Djerriwarrh people, was settled by Europeans in the 1830s as pastoral runs for sheep and cattle. Named after Melton Mowbray, it became a farming hub, with the 1850s gold rush boosting its role as a stopover. Surveyed in 1862, the railway’s arrival in 1884 enhanced trade, connecting Melton to Melbourne. Growth was slow until the 1970s, when Melbourne’s urban sprawl triggered suburban development. Post-WWII migration from Europe diversified the community, with new housing estates replacing farmlands. The 1980s saw industrial growth, with warehouses along the Western Highway, while schools like Melton Secondary College and recreational spaces emerged. The 21st century brought rapid expansion, with Woodgrove Shopping Centre (1999) and modern estates transforming Melton into a commuter hub. The Melton Botanic Garden, established in 2012, highlighted native flora, drawing visitors.
