About Melbourne
Melbourne is Victoria’s capital and a dynamic metropolis on Port Phillip Bay, celebrated for its cultural vibrancy, culinary excellence, and architectural diversity. Known for its temperate climate, it thrives on coffee culture, sports, and festivals like the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. The city’s Wurundjeri and Boon Wurrung heritage merges with a multicultural population, shaped by migration from Europe, Asia, and beyond, creating a rich tapestry of communities. Melbourne’s CBD dazzles with iconic laneways, trams, and skyscrapers, blending Victorian-era buildings with modern marvels. Home to world-class institutions like the University of Melbourne, cultural hubs like Federation Square, and sporting venues like the MCG, it’s a global leader in arts, education, and innovation. Its green spaces, such as the Royal Botanic Gardens, and thriving dining scene make Melbourne a top destination, consistently ranked among the world’s most liveable cities.
Origin of name
Melbourne’s name honour’s British Prime Minister William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne, chosen by Governor Richard Bourke in 1837. Reflecting colonial ties, it replaced earlier names like Batmania, aligning with the settlement’s formal survey and growth as a key port on Port Phillip Bay.
History
Melbourne, originally Wurundjeri and Boon Wurrung land, was settled by Europeans in 1835 through John Batman’s Port Phillip Association. Proclaimed a town in 1837, it surged during the 1850s gold rush, becoming Australia’s wealthiest city, with grand structures like Flinders Street Station. The 1860s railway expansion and 1880s land boom cemented its financial dominance. Post-WWII migration from Europe, Asia, and the Middle East diversified the city, fueling suburban growth and cultural vibrancy. The 1956 Olympics and 2006 Commonwealth Games elevated its global profile. The 20th century saw industrial growth, with the Port of Melbourne driving trade, while the arts flourished through institutions like the National Gallery of Victoria. The 1990s brought urban renewal, with Southbank and Docklands transforming industrial zones into cultural and commercial hubs.
