About Hastings
Hastings, a charming coastal town 58 km southeast of Melbourne on Western Port Bay, is renowned for its maritime heritage, serene beaches, and vibrant community. Part of the Mornington Peninsula Shire, it thrives on fishing, tourism, and agriculture, with a temperate climate fostering waterfront recreation and orchards. Hastings’ Bunurong heritage blends with a diverse community, enriched by post-war migration, creating a welcoming atmosphere with events like the Hastings Street Festival. Its bustling marina, historic pier, and proximity to wineries make it a gateway to the Mornington Peninsula’s coastal and rural attractions. With shops, schools, and easy access via the Frankston-Flinders Road, Hastings balances small-town charm with modern connectivity.
Origin of name
Hastings’ name derives from Hastings, England, chosen in the 1860s by surveyor Henry Dana, reflecting colonial naming trends. Formalised in 1860, it evoked the English port town’s maritime significance, aligning with Hastings’ emerging identity as a coastal settlement on Western Port Bay.
History
Hastings, originally Bunurong land used for fishing and hunting, was settled by Europeans in the 1840s as pastoral runs. Named after Hastings, England, in 1860, it grew as a fishing village, with its natural harbour on Western Port Bay attracting mariners. The 1883 railway from Frankston spurred development, establishing Hastings as a port for timber and produce exports. By the early 20th century, the fishing industry thrived, with the Hastings Pier, built in 1854 and later rebuilt, becoming central. Post-WWII migration from Europe, particularly Italy, diversified the community, boosting agriculture and orchards. The 1960s saw the marina’s development, transforming Hastings into a boating hub. The 1980s brought suburban growth, with housing estates and the Western Port Marina enhancing tourism. Recent decades saw investment in foreshore revitalization, with boardwalks and parks.
