About Geelong

Geelong, located on Corio Bay in Victoria, 75 km southwest of Melbourne, is a vibrant coastal city known for its maritime history, cultural dynamism, and industrial strength. As Victoria’s second-largest city, it thrives on manufacturing, education, and tourism, with a temperate climate fostering waterfront recreation and agriculture.

Geelong’s Wadawurrung heritage blends with a diverse community, enriched by post-war immigration, creating a lively arts scene with festivals like Pako Festa. Its revitalised waterfront, historic wool stores, and modern amenities, including Deakin University, make Geelong a regional powerhouse with a blend of heritage and innovation.

Origin of name

Geelong’s name derives from the Wadawurrung word “Jillong,” meaning “land” or “cliffs,” referring to the area’s coastal landscape. Recorded by European surveyors in the 1830s, it was adopted in 1838 when the settlement was formalised, reflecting its Indigenous connection to Corio Bay’s geography.
History

Geelong, originally Wadawurrung land, was settled by Europeans in 1836 as a pastoral outpost. Surveyed in 1838, it grew rapidly due to its port on Corio Bay, servicing gold rush miners in the 1850s. The wool industry flourished, with Geelong becoming a major exporter by the 1860s, supported by the railway’s arrival in 1857. Industrial growth followed, with woollen mills, Ford’s factory (1925), and Alcoa’s smelter shaping its economy.

The 20th century saw cultural diversification through European and Asian immigration, boosting community vibrancy. Geelong’s port remains a key export hub, while Deakin University, established in 1974, solidified its educational prominence. The 1990s waterfront redevelopment transformed the bay into a tourism draw.

Famous landmarks

Its three most famous landmarks are:

  • Geelong Waterfront: A revitalized precinct with the Carousel, sculptures, and Cunningham Pier, ideal for recreation.
  • National Wool Museum: Housed in a 1872 bluestone wool store, it showcases Australia’s wool industry history.
  • Eastern Beach: A historic bathing complex with Art Deco architecture, offering swimming and scenic views.

Nearest cities and towns

Its five nearest cities and towns with their most famous landmark are:

  • Belmont (~5km): Barwon River Trail.
  • Torquay (~20km): Bells Beach.
  • Lara (~15km): Serendip Sanctuary.
  • Ocean Grove (~25km): Ocean Grove Beach.
  • Queenscliff (~30km): Fort Queenscliff.
