About Frankston
Frankston, a vibrant suburb 41 km southeast of Melbourne on Port Phillip Bay, is known for its waterfront, cultural energy, and urban amenities. In the City of Frankston, it’s a hub for retail, tourism, and education, with a temperate climate perfect for beachside activities, Bunurong and Wadawurrung heritage, and events like the Waterfront Festival.
Origin of name
Frankston’s name honors Charles Franks, an early settler killed in 1836 nearby. Surveyor George Smyth named it “Frankstone” in 1854, later simplified to Frankston. Reflecting colonial history, the name was formalized as the suburb grew along Port Phillip Bay’s shores.
History
Frankston, originally Bunurong and Wadawurrung land used for fishing, was settled by Europeans in the 1830s. Named after Charles Franks, it emerged as a fishing village post-1854 survey. The 1882 railway from Melbourne transformed it into a seaside resort, with piers and bathing facilities attracting holidaymakers. The Frankston Pier, built in the 1850s and rebuilt multiple times, became iconic. Post-WWII migration, particularly from Italy and Greece, diversified the community, spurring suburban growth in the 1960s with housing estates and Nepean Highway’s commercial strip. Industrial expansion included factories and a brief Monash University campus. The 1990s waterfront redevelopment revitalized the foreshore, adding sculptures, cafes, and the Kananook Creek trail. Designated Melbourne’s “second CBD” in the 2000s, Frankston saw investment in infrastructure like the Frankston Arts Centre.
Famous landmarks
Its three most famous landmarks are:
- Frankston Pier: A historic pier popular for fishing and scenic walks.
- Frankston Arts Centre: A cultural hub on Davey Street for theatre and exhibitions.
- Frankston Waterfront: A vibrant precinct with sculptures, playgrounds, and cafes.
