About Chelsea
Chelsea and Chelsea Heights, a serene suburb in Melbourne’s southeast, 31 km from the CBD, is known for its peaceful residential streets, proximity to Port Phillip Bay, and natural reserves. Part of the City of Kingston, it offers a relaxed lifestyle with access to wetlands, parks, and coastal amenities. Its temperate climate supports outdoor activities, while local shops and schools along Thames Promenade cater to families. Chelsea Heights’ multicultural community, shaped by post-war migration, fosters a welcoming vibe, with community events enhancing its suburban charm. Close to Chelsea’s beaches, it balances tranquility with urban connectivity.
Origin of name
Chelsea and Chelsea Heights’ name combines “Chelsea,” after the English town, reflecting colonial naming, and “Heights,” denoting its slightly elevated terrain. Adopted in the 1960s during subdivision, it is a residential area that has scenic views of Port Phillip Bay.
History
Chelsea and Chelsea Heights, originally Bunurong land, was used by Indigenous peoples for hunting and gathering before European settlement in the 1840s. Initially part of Chelsea’s pastoral lands, it remained rural until the 1960s, when post-WWII urban expansion spurred residential development. Named Chelsea and Chelsea Heights for its elevated landscape, the suburb grew with family homes and low-rise estates, attracting European migrants, particularly from Italy and Greece, diversifying the community. The 1980s saw infrastructure growth, with schools, shops, and parks. Proximity to the Edithvale-Seaford Wetlands, shaped its identity as a nature-focused suburb. The 1990s brought further development, with modern homes and community facilities.
Famous landmarks
Its three most famous landmarks are:
- Edithvale-Seaford Wetlands: A biodiverse reserve with boardwalks and bird hides.
- Chelsea Heights Community Centre: A hub on Thames Promenade for events, classes, and social gatherings.
- Springvale Road Reserve: A park with playgrounds, sports fields and walking paths.
Nearest suburbs
Its five nearest suburbs with their most famous landmark are:
- Chelsea (~2km): Chelsea Beach.
- Edithvale (~2km): Edithvale Wetlands.
- Aspendale (~3km): Aspendale Beach.
- Bonbeach (~3km): Bonbeach Life Saving Club.
Carrum (~4km): Carrum Beach.
