About Bendigo
Bendigo, situated in Victoria’s Loddon Valley, is a dynamic regional city 150 km northwest of Melbourne, celebrated for its gold rush heritage, cultural vibrancy, and architectural splendour. Known for its Mediterranean-like climate, Bendigo supports vineyards, orchards, and a thriving arts scene. Its streets, lined with grand Victorian-era buildings, reflect a prosperous past, while modern amenities like universities and hospitals anchor its role as a regional hub. The city’s diverse community, shaped by Indigenous Dja Dja Wurrung heritage and global immigration, fosters festivals, markets, and a rich culinary landscape, making Bendigo a cultural and economic cornerstone.
Origin of name
Bendigo’s name originates from Bendigo Creek, named after a local shepherd nicknamed “Bendigo,” likely inspired by English boxer William Abednego Thompson. Used in the 1840s, the name replaced Sandhurst by 1853, officially adopted in 1891, reflecting the area’s gold rush identity.
History
Bendigo, originally Dja Dja Wurrung land, transformed in 1851 with gold discoveries, sparking a boom that drew thousands, including Chinese miners whose cultural influence persists. Initially called Sandhurst, it was proclaimed a township in 1852 and renamed Bendigo in 1891. By the 1870s, it was Victoria’s wealthiest city, with gold funding opulent architecture. The railway’s arrival in 1862 and deep quartz mining sustained growth, while the 20th century brought diversification into manufacturing, education, and health. La Trobe University’s campus and Bendigo Health solidified its regional importance.
Famous landmarks
Its three most famous landmarks are:
- Bendigo Art Gallery: Founded in 1887 on View Street, Australia’s oldest regional gallery displays Victorian-era and contemporary art.
- Central Deborah Gold Mine: A preserved 1900s mine offering underground tours, showcasing Bendigo’s mining history.
- Sacred Heart Cathedral: A Gothic Revival cathedral, completed in 1977, with a soaring spire dominating the skyline.
Nearest towns
Its five nearest cities and towns with their most famous landmark are:
- Kangaroo Flat (~6km): Kangaroo Flat Botanic Gardens.
- Eaglehawk (~5km): Eaglehawk Town Hall.
- Castlemaine (~35km): Castlemaine Art Museum.
- Heathcote (~50km): Heathcote Wine Hub.
- Maldon (~40km): Maldon Historic Railway Station.
