About Ballarat
Ballarat, situated in Victoria’s Central Highlands, 113 km northwest of Melbourne, is a historic regional city renowned for its gold rush heritage, cultural richness, and architectural grandeur. Located in a fertile basin, it supports agriculture, education, and tourism, with a cool, temperate climate fostering vineyards and gardens. Ballarat’s heritage, rooted in Wathaurong Indigenous culture, blends with a diverse community shaped by global immigration, particularly from the 19th-century gold rush. Its vibrant arts scene, marked by festivals like the Ballarat International Foto Biennale, complements a thriving culinary landscape, with cafes and restaurants lining historic streets. Grand Victorian-era buildings, funded by gold wealth, stand alongside modern amenities like Federation University and Ballarat Health Services, cementing its role as a regional hub. Ballarat’s commitment to preserving its history, through museums and restored sites, alongside its embrace of modernity, makes it a dynamic destination for visitors and residents alike.
Origin of name
Ballarat’s name comes from the Wathaurong word “Ballaarat,” meaning “resting place” or “elbow,” describing a water-rich camping area. Adopted in the 1830s by European settlers, it was formalized as Ballarat by 1852, reflecting its Indigenous heritage and pastoral significance.
History
Ballarat, originally Wathaurong land, was a pastoral settlement by the 1830s. The 1851 gold rush sparked a global influx of miners, including Chinese and Europeans, transforming it into a boomtown. Proclaimed a township in 1852, Ballarat’s gold wealth funded grand architecture, making it Victoria’s richest city by the 1870s. The 1854 Eureka Rebellion, a miners’ uprising against colonial taxes, became a defining moment in Australia’s democratic history. The railway’s arrival in 1862 enhanced trade, while deep mining sustained growth into the 1880s. By the 20th century, Ballarat diversified into manufacturing, education, and health, with Federation University and Ballarat Base Hospital as key institutions.
Famous landmarks
Its three most famous landmarks are:

- Ballarat Art Gallery: Founded in 1884 on Lydiard Street, Australia’s oldest regional gallery, showcasing colonial and contemporary art.
- Lake Wendouree: A 238-hectare lake, developed in 1851, used for rowing regattas and surrounded by scenic gardens.
