Evolving from social and medallist dancing, it pits couples against each other in a dazzling display of skill and artistry. Competitors dress in stunning, eye-catching costumes, embodying grace and power. About Victoria

Victoria, a state in southeastern Australia, was named in honor of Queen Victoria, who reigned over the British Empire during its establishment. Originally part of New South Wales, it was separated and declared a distinct Crown colony in 1851, adopting the queen’s name to reflect its colonial ties and royal patronage.

Brief history

Victoria’s history stretches back at least 40,000 years, with Aboriginal groups like the Boonwurrung, Wurundjeri, and Yorta Yorta thriving in the region, speaking over 30 languages before European arrival. In 1770, James Cook claimed the east coast for Britain, and by 1835, European settlers founded Melbourne on the Yarra River. Initially part of New South Wales, the Port Phillip District grew rapidly, leading to its separation in 1851 after residents celebrated the news with a four-day public holiday, fireworks, and the opening of Princes Bridge. The 1850s gold rush, centered in towns like Ballarat, fueled a population boom and economic growth, establishing Melbourne as Australia’s financial hub. By 1901, Victoria joined the Commonwealth of Australia, with Melbourne serving as the federal capital until Canberra’s completion in 1927. The state’s economy diversified, balancing agriculture such as wheat, vegetables and wool with manufacturing and services like tourism.

Largest cities

Victoria’s largest city, Melbourne, is a cultural and sporting epicenter, known for its laneways and Victorian-era architecture. Geelong, a port city, supports industry and coastal tourism, while Ballarat retains its gold rush heritage, attracting visitors with historical sites like Sovereign Hill. Victoria’s multicultural fabric, shaped by post-war European migration and recent global influences, thrives in its cities, blending Indigenous heritage with modern diversity.

Five most famous landmarks

Its five most famous landmarks are:

  • Great Ocean Road: A scenic coastal drive featuring the Twelve Apostles limestone formations.
Melbourne Cricket Ground: A historic sports venue hosting major events like the Australian Open.
  • Shrine of Remembrance: A Melbourne war memorial honoring WWI soldiers, built in 1934.
  • Royal Botanic Gardens: A serene oasis in Melbourne with diverse plant species and heritage gardens.
  • Eureka Skydeck: Melbourne’s tallest building, offering panoramic city views from its 88th floor.
