Here’s what you need to know when you go dancing for the first time. It’s a simple list to help you prepare.
What to do first when wanting to attend dance classes
Let the studio know you’re coming to help with bookings and staffing. Please contact the studio directly via phone, email or their social media.
Come early to your first dance class

Do you need a partner when going to a dance class?
No, many come alone and there are plenty of students and teachers to dance with. Friends and partners are welcome.
What do you wear to dance classes
Dress in neat casual comfortable clothing. Wear shoes that you will be able to dance in – a pair of flat shoes or runners. No thongs or sandals please.
What to bring to dance classes?
Your Photo ID, a water bottle, a willingness to learn, and a sense of humour!
Need more help about attending dance classes?

Social Dancing
Slip into dressier outfits and enjoy partnering with others at lively, fun-filled events.
Medallist examinations
Perform in formal dancewear for friends and an adjudicator, earning recognition for your skills.

To begin, try a dance class – it’s the simplest way to discover the joy of DanceSport and feel its infectious energy.
Kick off with dance classes
Dance classes that offer Latin and Ballroom are the perfect entry point into DanceSport. No partner is needed, making it easy to join solo, though bringing a friend can add extra fun and support. Instructors teach basic moves, guiding you through simple patterns set to music. You’ll be dancing from day one, building skills in a welcoming environment that fosters lasting friendships.
DanceSport Australia-affiliated studios and schools are spread across Melbourne and Victoria, ensuring a location near you. These professional venues adhere to a strict Code of Conduct, offering a safe and supportive space to start your journey. With convenient access, there’s no excuse not to try!
Benefits of DanceSport
DanceSport is more than dance—it’s a transformative experience that nurtures body, mind, and spirit:
Physical health
Dancing tones muscles, boosts coordination, and improves posture, all while feeling like play rather than exercise.
Confidence and communication
Dance classes enhance self-assurance, teaching you to-lead, follow, and express yourself with ease.
Mental sharpness
Learning dance steps hones focus, discipline, and creativity, enriching your cognitive skills.
Every class is a rewarding investment in your well-being, blending fitness, fun, and personal growth into one vibrant package.
Next step for DanceSport
Commit to dance classes for a few months to build a strong foundation. DanceSport encompasses a variety of dances – each with its own character and technique – so take time to master the basics. Studios offer flexible options: pay-as-you-go classes or prepaid packages. Tuition costs vary, so ask questions to find a studio that fits your budget and goals.
As you grow, DanceSport opens new doors. Many see it as an artistic expression, not just a sport, offering paths to suit your ambitions- whether social connection, technical mastery, or competitive glory. Here’s what lies ahead:
Social dancing
After honing your skills in dance classes, try social dancing at studio events or school competitions. These gatherings let you practice what you’ve learned, from dance etiquette to partnering, in a lively setting. Social dancing showcases your growing confidence and communication skills while providing fun and exercise. It’s a fantastic way to connect with others and celebrate your progress.
Medallist dancing
Ready to take it further? Medallist examinations offer a structured path to refine your skills. You’ll train in technique, footwork, posture, and internationally recognised dance figures, mastering a range of styles. At medal exams, you perform in formal dancewear, receiving personalized feedback and official recognition from a certified adjudicator. This step builds confidence and prepares many dancers for the competitive stage.
Competition dancing
For those drawn to the spotlight, competition dancing is the ultimate thrill. Evolving from social and medallist dancing, it pits couples against each other in a dazzling display of skill and artistry. Competitors dress in stunning, eye-catching costumes, embodying grace and power. With numerous DanceSport competitions held in Melbourne yearly, this level offers endless opportunities to shine and push your limits.
Understanding DanceSport
DanceSport, an officially recognised sport, blends competitive ballroom dancing with a wide array of styles. It encompasses training, participation, competition, and accreditation, making it a multifaceted pursuit. More than a physical activity, DanceSport demands strength, agility, stamina, and coordination, paired with creative elements like musical interpretation, choreography, and costume design. It’s a rare fusion of athletic discipline and artistic expression, appealing to both body and soul.
Why DanceSport stands out
DanceSport is a lifestyle that builds teamwork, grace, and mental resilience. Its versatility lets you tailor your experience—whether you’re expanding your social circle, earning medals, or chasing competitive glory. The artistic freedom to express yourself through movement sets it apart, while its physical demands keep you fit and focused. For many, it’s a lifelong passion that blends community, creativity, and challenge.

About Victoria
Victoria, a state in southeastern Australia, was named in honor of Queen Victoria, who reigned over the British Empire during its establishment. Originally part of New South Wales, it was separated and declared a distinct Crown colony in 1851, adopting the queen’s name to reflect its colonial ties and royal patronage.
Brief history
Victoria’s history stretches back at least 40,000 years, with Aboriginal groups like the Boonwurrung, Wurundjeri, and Yorta Yorta thriving in the region, speaking over 30 languages before European arrival. In 1770, James Cook claimed the east coast for Britain, and by 1835, European settlers founded Melbourne on the Yarra River. Initially part of New South Wales, the Port Phillip District grew rapidly, leading to its separation in 1851 after residents celebrated the news with a four-day public holiday, fireworks, and the opening of Princes Bridge. The 1850s gold rush, centered in towns like Ballarat, fueled a population boom and economic growth, establishing Melbourne as Australia’s financial hub. By 1901, Victoria joined the Commonwealth of Australia, with Melbourne serving as the federal capital until Canberra’s completion in 1927. The state’s economy diversified, balancing agriculture such as wheat, vegetables and wool with manufacturing and services like tourism.
Largest cities
Victoria’s largest city, Melbourne, is a cultural and sporting epicenter, known for its laneways and Victorian-era architecture. Geelong, a port city, supports industry and coastal tourism, while Ballarat retains its gold rush heritage, attracting visitors with historical sites like Sovereign Hill. Victoria’s multicultural fabric, shaped by post-war European migration and recent global influences, thrives in its cities, blending Indigenous heritage with modern diversity.
Five most famous landmarks
Its five most famous landmarks are:
- Great Ocean Road: A scenic coastal drive featuring the Twelve Apostles limestone formations.
Melbourne Cricket Ground: A historic sports venue hosting major events like the Australian Open. - Shrine of Remembrance: A Melbourne war memorial honoring WWI soldiers, built in 1934.
- Royal Botanic Gardens: A serene oasis in Melbourne with diverse plant species and heritage gardens.
- Eureka Skydeck: Melbourne’s tallest building, offering panoramic city views from its 88th floor.
